Lyrics

These Middling Years

Seems once I was more
Than these middling years
More purpose, more choice
More vivid the work,
More livid the life
Survival grows more part
of all purpose I suppose
Safe living the art
Comfort blanking the woes

But now I wish back
Wish I’d cast further upwind,
Wish I’d cast further, bigger fish to find,
Caught more life if I could
Splashed more in the stream
Lest unruffled it steals
Me plain out to sea

What moment will accept my offering?
My hard work and intensity
I’d make myself worthy of interest
I’m starting to see out of the fog

I’d cast through the fearful
Where currents run so fast
Splash in them o’er and ‘round
Even over the falls

Risk short life instead of infirm old age
For times free of time
For living this race
Safe pacing such time wasting
That huge difference
Lasting my eternity/

To match the current stride for stroke
So time runs near nothing for me
Deep breath of purpose, so vital
Plunging in depths

Burst to the surface
Gasping thundering spit

Blowing defiance and ready to repeat
I took the plunge
And rose remade
As give and get back
As vivid, not a grey lack

I’d rest content, a link
Tween sky and sea,
Tween time and its naught

Flow with the stream, yet fish always ahead
Fly with the sky, search further in me
